CubaDisco 2008 in Havana
There is no doubt that the best opportunity to know from a first hand about the discography made in Cuba during 2007 is the 2008 CubaDisco Festival.
The International Cuban Record Fair --CubaDisco-- in its 12th edition, was officially announced by Ciro Benemelis, President of the event's Organizing Committee.
This year's event, set for May 17th till the 25th in Havana, the Cuban capital, is dedicated to Africa and to two artistic expressions: music and poetry. Every time we speak about CubaDisco, we are talking about music, but every edition is always linked to some different topics. For instance, the edition of the year 2003 was dedicated to Germany, the 2004 one to the Caribbean, the 2005 fair to women and Japan was the guest of honor, while in 2006 was the dance and last year the guest of honor was Venezuela and cinema was the main attraction.
In the 2004 edition of CubaDisco the longest Son of the world was made. This time, in 2008, prior to the Havana musical event but as part of the festival it has been planned to play the longest Rumba of the world. Every province will hold this event which has been called "The Longest Rumba" in order to establish a new record in this matter. Folkloric companies like D' Okokan y la Campana (The Bell) will be in this edition, in addition to Los Reyes de la Rumba, newly created, among other professional and amateur groups in the territory who have included this type of rhythm within their repertoires.
Taking that into account, the longest Rumba will start on Saturday the 3rd of May at 9 pm at the eastern city of Guantanamo and will be finishing on Saturday the 17th in the capital city, Havana, at 9pm.
This year Africa will be the main attraction of the event so this will give a great opportunity to know the oral, literature, dance and plastic arts traditions with all the magnificence this country has in the Cuban cultural traditions.
The Presidents of Honor of CubaDisco will be the prestigious Cuban researchers Maria Teresa Linares, Rogelio Martinez Fure and Miguel Barnet.
CubaDisco is also an opportunity for reflection and debate and thus, the event's program includes theoretical sessions on our musical culture, as well as the presentation of CDs and film showings, among other activities. That's why the Centre of Research and Development of Cuban Music is taking care of the whole preparation of the International Symposium of the CubaDisco Fair, which is a theoretical event as well as a tradition in this kind of events.
During the International Cuban Record Festival, CubaDisco 2008, the Second meting of the Necessary Song will be held also, in Havana as it is an opportunity to emphasize the compromise values and defense of identity and authenticity of the artist and its people.
CubaDisco 2008, as well as the previous ones is an event created and supported by the Minister of Culture of Cuba, and the Cuban Music Institute.Sources:
